RAM, or "Random Access Memory", is a set of chips that hold all active software and files, including the operating system. The more RAM a computer has, the more applications can be opened simultaneously, and the more memory each application can use; and the better the overall performance of your Mac.
Manufacturers (Apple, too) include only enough RAM with their computers for basic operations. RAM is an expensive component. Minimal RAM lowers the price. Add more RAM! Do it immediately. Current Macs are being sold with 1GB to 2GB of RAM. Double that amount, or add even more for heavy audio, video, and photgraphy production work.
